I played Empire on my Amiga 500 long ago. I am still embarrassed by the ease the AI stomped me the first few (dozen) times. Empire was ferocious and is deserving of its legendary status.
Unlike a lot of wargames the Empire AI doesn't send small waves of kamikaze units to pester you it builds up a real army and steamrolls you if you are not prepared.
I'd download it, but I don't think my ego could handle another smackdown. :)

I started playing Red Baron a couple weeks ago and while the graphics leave much to be desired the AI and flight model are still top notch. Enemy fighters stick to you like glue and rarely make boneheaded mistakes. It's still a challenge.
The main problem I had was finding enemy aircraft. They appear as a tiny group of pixels at first so at first they can surprise you. I eventually learned the colors to look for and can recognize the enemy farther away than my wingmen now.
Red Baron is my favorite WWI flight sim and if it had todays graphics I think it would still be a winner.

I just played Countdown to Doomsday again and had as much fun as I did in 1990. Doomsday gives you a great story and despite the archaic graphics and no sound beyond beeps and squeaks you still find yourself drawn in. It supports a mouse but I just use the arrow keys, much simpler.
The main drawback is, of course, getting it to work correctly. But once you do; you get the chance to literally save Earth from destruction. It doesn't get more heroic than that.

Maybe it wasn't the best space sim ever but Jacob's Star was pretty dang fun.
If you hadn't played in the tabletop universe I can see how the unfamiliarity would bring down the experience. But for those of us who knew (and loved) the background Jacob's Star provided us with the chance to fly in our favorite fighters against the tyrannical forces of the Terran Overlord Government.
The cartoon graphics were crisp and I liked them a lot more, in many cases, than the occasionally muddy WC3 graphics. Not to mention the system requirements were nowhere near as draconian.
To sum up Jacob's Star was a good game that didn't quite find a wide enough audience and was vastly overshadowed by superior competitors released at the same time.
