Summary

This follow-up to the classic Castle of Dr.Brain sadly doesn't live up to its predecessor, mostly because the wonderful variety of educational puzzles in the original is reduced to a boring lot of language puzzles (e.g. word search and grammatical games) that feels more like English 101 than anything else. Most puzzles also seem too hard for the intended age group of 12+ yrs. old. Overall, the game will be fun only to those who like grammatical challenges, and not as original as its predecessor.

The Island of Dr. Brain picks up where the Castle of Dr. Brain left off- a wildly varying selection of puzzles presented in a humorous, surreal fashion, with more of everything mentioned. The art style remains cartoonish with great attention to detail, and the interface remains strictly point-and-click. In contrast to the summary, I do not feel there is really an excess of word puzzles- certainly the foreign language word search is a bit irritating, though. I also don't feel the age level is inappropriate, as I definitely completed this game before I left elementary school, which would have been well under age 12. At the lowest difficulty setting, the puzzles are quite straightforward, and in combination with the hint token system, there is no puzzle that can't be made trivial for any reasonably patient child who can read, or bypassed outright with the use of enough hints.
This game is an improvement over the Castle of Dr. Brain, and a great educational game overall. Unlike many educational games which condescend to the point of boredom or are mostly action games with occasional math puzzles, the Island of Dr. Brain asks the user to think rather than click blindly and presents enough variety and challenge to stay interesting, wrapped in an attractive presentation.
