Summary

One of the best 3D tactical combat simulations, I really don't know why this game never made it into any Hall of Fame.In SEAL Team, you will assemble a 4-member SEAL team to carry out missions in the Mae Khong Delta during the Vietnam War. Missions cover a wide range, including espionage, rescue, recon, and demolition. The game's graphical and sound atmospheres are excellent (you'll know enemies are nearby from the boot-cracking sounds), as is the authenticity of hand signals, weapons, medals, and so on. There are dozens of SEAL commandos under your command, and you must be careful to let them all experience combat, or you might end up with only a handful of veterans but dozens of "green" soldiers. Each commando has different character statistics and specialty, and you will grow quite attached to them as the war wears on (although not to the personal level as Jagged Alliance).

For all its resemblance to other first-person 3D shooters, SEAL Team was definitely not designed for action gamers, because patience and observational skills are key to winning in this game: as in real life, you'll need to wait minutes, or even almost an hour, to ambush enemies successfully. Such long pauses when nothing seems to be going on will doubtless turn trigger-happy gamers off, but those who crave realistic simulation of Vietnam War will be well-rewarded with a very deep and engaging game. Two thumbs up!

SEAL Team is definitely about patience.
The only other PC game I know to be so focused on patience is the 2001 classic Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon.
Along with Ghost Recon, SEAL Team can be identified as a "3D real-time special forces tactical combat simulation): the key issue to the mission success is the careful, very careful positioning of the team, the picky time-management of the team, not just on the hardware.
These are the basics steps to be followed entering into enemy territory, eventually leading to a happy extraction of the whole Team, unharmed, of course.
A very great classic, despite many, many years. Unsurpassed, like Ghost Recon.

Another fantastic game from one of the better years for PC gaming, 1993. This game has it all, with a variety of interesting missions, gear to unlock over time, character development and gameplay to rival titles only recently released.

The game's premise is that you are a leader of the SEAL teams in the Vietnam war, going on aggressive patrols, operations to attack Viet Cong and NVA bases, missions to capture enemy personnel etc., over a years-long period. Your platoon evolves over time, gaining new personnel and, crucially, new equipment, which extends the utility of your team greatly. From the early days of M16s with 20-round clips to larger magazine capacities and completely new gear in the later years, the gear you assign to each patrol member plays a key role in the missions you fight, often deciding its outcome.

Missions can last for hours, with your team having to watch out both during ingress and egress, with enemy soldiers and traps trying to thwart your progress throughout. Teams have to then attack targets, move quietly through the jungle and stay undetected for as long as possible to guarantee their security - your SEALS are not supermen, and a determined peasant with an AK47 can take out a couple of team members very quickly. On the other hand, your team members can be devastate the enemy if an ambush is set up properly, and your troops will sometimes need to use their firepower to the fullest if calling in emergency evac under enemy attack, something which is often necessary if things start to go wrong quickly.

To do this, you have a variety of commands at your disposal, all with their own signals. You can split your patrol of four operatives into two to allow for greater coverage if setting up an ambush, to have your soldiers snipe at enemies and to cover more ground as necessary. Team AI is surprisingly good, and your team members can generally take care of themselves if left to their own devices.

This does, however, bring up a couple of issues with the game, one of which is the control system. Playing the game with a mouse is ill-advised, as mouse movement corresponds to the movement of your SEAL teams, rather than, as one might expect, some form of mouselook. The keyboard is also rather overburdened with the variety of commands that have to be accomplished with it, with orders from capturing enemy soldiers to having your men return fire only. The sound is still very respectable today, but the graphics look very dated, and some of the images are hard to mark out.

Overall, though, the game has definitely stood the test of time, and the intriguing missions; progression of your platoon members and their gear; and the sheer satisfaction of having a plan come together overweigh the negatives of the control system and, at times, murky graphics.

9/10 for a slightly flawed masterpiece.
