Summary

One of the most unique and compelling games ever made, Princess Maker 2 is an excellent ?life simulation? from Gainax, and the only game in the Princess Maker series to have been translated into English. As to what the game is exactly, MobyGames says it better than I could: "Raise a daughter from childhood into adulthood. Your actions determine whether she will live or die, and what she will become. You can have her enter school, seek adventure in the wilderness, get a part-time job, break into high society, or any of many other possibilities. 74 Unique endings. A very different kind of game."

What makes Princess Maker 2 a lot of fun is the sheer amount of options and actions you can do, which result in seemingly unlimited range of personalities your (adopted) daughter grows up to be. Although you are limited to raising her from age 10 to 18, everything you do will influence how the child will grow up. You first choose your daughter?s name, your age, both birthdates, and her blood type. Then you will decide on a detailed routine of her daily life, from schooling and hobbies, to how you want her to react to different people she will meet throughout the game. There are many surprises and random events to ensure that no two games are alike. With many factors that affect your daughter?s character, the game?s replayability is astounding, and the 70+ endings will keep you hooked for months on end. Two thumbs up, way up!

Note: This is the English translation that was never officially released. Therefore, there are *gaps* in translation, and missing text in some endings. This beta version is created as part of a three-way contract between SoftEgg, who did the English translation, Gainax, and IntraCorp. The game was never released because publisher Intracorp went bankrupt. The contract expired in 2002, so hopefully someone will release the game as shareware or freeware in the future. You can read the very interesting (albeit unfortunate) story of the English version in the Related Link section below.

I liked it OK, but possibly because there are so many different possibilities, it gets a bit tedious trying to explore them all.

Of the most unique games you will ever play.

This game is unlike any other game you'll most likely ever play. It's a Life Sim and a RPG at the same time. Immediately, upon first glance, it comes off as some weird manga sytle game that looks more like a "Dating Sim" game, then anything else.

And, it some ways it is.

But, instead of building up your own stats to get the girl you're after, you have to build up your daughter's stat to get her the life you want for her.

Various Jobs and Classes raise or lower skills. Working on the farm will make her stronger and sturdier, but reduce her more charismatic skills. Intellectual classes increase her brains, but lower her physical features. You get the idea.

Also, on top of that, you have watch her "Stress", making her work too often, or constantly go to classes, and she will stress out and may run away for a month! During that time, you can't do anything but wait for her to return.

Also, there is a JRPG style aspect in that you can send her on various "quests" where she will venture alone, have to fight monsters, meet various creatures and people, and perhaps find great treasures to aid in her development.

You can play this game in so many ways, with so many different outcomes. Make her into the titular "Princess", or make her become a bandit or prositute upon the streets. The choice is yours.

I would rate this game a perfect 10, except for the few unpolished spots, and unfinished aspects of this "Beta".

This is a popular series in Japan, where there have been 5 major releases, and ports to just about every system imaginable. Such as MSX, PC, SNES, Playstation, DS, PSP and more.

If only this game had a chance to be properly released, I believe some company like Atlus would be porting english versions of the follow ups to this day.
