Summary

A good PC conversion of Konami's hit arcade game of the same name, Contra is a Vietnam war platform game that features Rambo-style one-man commando against seeming the entire planet's enemy population, complete with colorful explosions, varied enemy units, and excellent level design.

Although Contra may look just like every other shooter on the market, the game actually offers a much greater gameplay variety than its rivals. The play control, for example, is very responsive, and you can shoot in any direction. You can also cling to walls, jump, and dodge objects (no, not rifle bullets). You can even hold down the fire button for auto-fire, just like in the arcades. The only glaring weakness I've found is that the game is a bit too short though-- but then again, this is true for most Konami game. The bottom line is this: Contra is fun, fast-paced, and slightly easy... but that shouldn't turn veterans away. No, not from a game whose name is still going strong in various console-based games, although only one more PC conversion (Super C) was made. Two thumbs up!

Note: This game generally cannot be run without the replacement contra.exe available below in contra_exe.rar.  If this file is not available, please request it in the forums.

I have to say that Ms. Underdog's review of this game can be concluded highly inaccurate. Inaccuracy ranges from the backstory involving Vietnam and the "entire planet's enemy population" to the gameplay. I must also mention that most of the next paragraph in her so-called review provides very vague and general info about the game, more suitable as a description for the Contra series as a whole than one particular game. Besides, she made a few errors. Not only are bullets one of the main things you dodge, the play control in this game is unforgiving. In no way is the play control responsive. Also, clinging to walls wasn't implemented until Contra 3. The fact that the game has a really nasty protection scheme makes you wonder if she played it or not. If so, why was nobody given the game fix earlier or why was the game offered to download without a defect warning?

Regarding the game itself, it's below average (I had to clear a screenshot misuse). If you use a keyboard, don't expect to pass the third stage because the control system is next to unusable, especially with the unusually fast-moving player. Basically, if you want to play this game properly, use a joystick or a compatible gamepad, though I highly recommend the latter.

Overall, I'd say that the game is very accurate to the arcade original, though level design is slightly altered and it really does kind of resemble NES Contra. The occasional collision detection and buggy enemies can cause some troubles, though. Also, play some great music in the background, because all you hear in the game are a bunch of beeps. Besides this, almost all aspects remain true to the original.

The graphics are also a cause for my low score. I mean, it's DOS, so I know you can't expect much. But why shame Contra onto such a setup? Why not wait until later for a VGA version to be possible? The poor color scheme makes bullets and dangers really hard to see.

The name of the development company is Banana Development Productions. Hmm, with a company as absurd (and whose name is quite a concern) as that, I wonder how Konami permitted them to develop the DOS conversion. The consistent theme of Contra's appeal WITHOUT a story is really emphasized in this game. Well, first I want to point out that the "intro" in this game is misleading as it is. But the only thing remotely close to an ending you'll get is a single screen of credits.

It's mainly for the collectors. Don't pick it up if you intend on beating it (because, come on, these days, it's hard to satisfy the restrictions).

Enjoyable ground shooter. One of the top 30 games for the Nes-nintendo. If you like this game play Super C the sequal or Abuse a similar game. What was that cheat code for contra and lifeforce on Nes ududlrlrselstart also worked for lifeforce LOL. I still play this game.
