Summary

Metal Gear for PC is a good conversion of the NES game of the same name, which is in turn based on a MSX blockbuster (MSX was an early console system that no longer exists). This is the one that started it all. You are "Solid Snake," a veteran commando whose mission is to infiltrate an enemy base in order to destroy "Metal Gear," the world's ultimate super weapon.

Metal Gear plays like no other shooter. Instead of shooting everything in sight, you must learn to sneak around and evade stronger enemies or you will get caught. You must also free any captive you find. Freeing enough captives, and your "vital sign" (i.e. health bar) as well as your rank will increase. Get the hostage killed, and you'll immediately be demoted. This adds a fun element of planning to the game.

The game's graphics are excellent for its time, and the interface is intuitive. The original MSX version, however, had a better story and even better beginning scene-- a cool sewer entrance as supposed to a lackluster air raid. Overall, this is a great game, but inferior to the MSX original. My recommendation: play this game, then play the MSX version on an emulator to see how different they are. This PC version is still much better than most action games of its time, but playing the MSX version is necessary to understand why this series is still going strong. If you like the game, check out the superior sequel Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake on this site.

I don't know if the original game is also unplayable... maybe it's the download offered or just incompatibility with DOSBox. But essentially, progress in the game will be impossible about 60% in the game because of a bug (glitch? missing file?) that prevents two vital items from appearing.

The constant inaccuracies of Underdogs' reviews are making me wonder whether any of these games were even played or if stock information from other reviews are being used. Or perhaps they're carrying over their opinion of a different version/port of the game, which is a very bad move, espcially with all the differences.

Structurally, the game is identical to the NES version. However, this particular port is so broken that it's not funny. Half the gameplay changes may be just unintentional, caused by the glitches.

Among the many things that make this game messed up:
-All bosses can be killed with punches or hand gun.
-All your guns fire at an extremely high rate. Hell, the landmines are like ring-shaped bullets that fire out at high speeds.
-All the NES flaws are present, though in some places, they seem "fixed" (ie, screwed up in another way).
-There is no recovery time for your character and in the beginning of the game, 4 hits is all it takes for you to drop (sneak by unnoticed, or you'll lose all your health in literally one second).
-At least 3 doors don't open, 2 of which hold vital items.
-Surveillance cameras do not alert guards.

Some gameplay mechanics were modified:
-Laser sensors kill you immediately instead.
-The windy bridge is modified by some strange laser security system.
-The elevator sections are modified, though they look cool.
-No more passwords. Common to most DOS games, you have on-the-spot save and load option.

Please provide a fix for this game so that any gamer can properly play through and give a real opinion. Because at the moment, the game cannot be beaten.

I do have to note that the game is really fast and smooth (in fact, moreso than the NES version). So fast that you can get to the point of progress halt in at most 30 minutes (something that requires around 1 hour in all other versions).

UPDATE: Upon debugging to further progress in the game, it turns out that the game is indeed unbeatable. There is a room door that needs card 8, but it has card 8 INSIDE the room. Again, it's uncertain whether this is a problem with the game rip or the original yielded this flaw.

ADDENDUM: Upon further reflection, it's highly unlikely that the game's company would let THESE flaws pass. The final verdict is to avoid this download and please ignore the "review" provided by the site.
