Summary

Classic real time RPG set in the world of Britannia where you are sentenced to rescue the princess from an evil sorcerer. You start the game in the Stygian Abyss (prison) with minimal gear and must trace the path of the troll through the remnants of the various colonies to find and save her. As you go you improve your skill by chanting mantras at the various ankhs you find along the way. There are numerous puzzles, sub-quest to solve and enemies to defeat along the way. The music is a great combination of soothing exploring, heart pounding combat and exhilarating victory music. There are also numerous spells that can be cast using the runes (some included in the manual some not). A large variety of weapons and other useful items. Each level with its own races and discoveries.

The interface is unique and very user friendly (look, grab, communicate, fight and use at the click of a button). The storage/inventory was way ahead of its time: weight for items, bags for storage and item combination (popcorn or rotworm stew anyone?). The auto map and note functionality was fantastic. The bedrolls improving the benefit of sleep and items belonging to other characters was also a great advance. With the different classes and styles of game play there are hours of replay to discover all this game has to offer. Other nice features where the tracking (closeness/direction and type of nearby dwellers), date/status (sleep/time/hunger status). The weapons and armor quality is reduced with use and the vitality/manna vials are ingenious. the chain to switch from inventory to stats and to exit from the rune bag saves screen space and keeps everything readily available

I spent many hours fishing and experimenting with various combinations of runes, mantras and items.
The game systems only flaws were that there is no climbing and no multi-player IMHO.

Fantastic 3D RPG that was the first of its kind. It inspired the creators of The Elder Scrolls Series.
