Summary

Shadow of the Comet is one of the best horror games ever produced, with a gripping storyline based on Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, good puzzles, and a wonderful atmosphere and characters despite some interface quirks.

As journalist who arrived in a small town to photograph comet Halley's passing, you soon find that the event signifies a more sinister plan. Some pixel-hunting and time limits are annoying, but the game is excellent overall.

Solid game

This is a great game if you are a Lovecraft fan (as I am). If you are asking "H.P. Who?" there may not be as much an attraction. I did enjoy playing this, but more because "It's Lovecraft!" than because it's a great game. Even for the vintage the graphics seem a bit clunky, and in quite a few sequences, perspective is bizarre -- your character stays the same absolute size, and when he goes to the back of a room he looks like a giant! A few bits where you are looking for a secret entrance were frustrating; a walkthrough is virtually a necessity. A lot of it ends up being visiting every building and location in town over and over until the right sequence of events triggers. There are a few interesting puzzles; I recall getting a kick out of the one where you have to develop your own photos! As the main article notes, there are a couple of "time limit" puzzles, as well as one that seems like one but isn't: escaping from an underground monster through a maze seems to be timed, but is really only "death for the wrong door."

Bottom line: if hearing or seeing the name "Cthulhu" sends a shiver up your spine, play this game. If your reaction just then was "WTF is a Cthulhu?" -- well, give it a chance, but don't feel bad if you don't get into it.

Ia! Cthulhu fhtaghn!
