Guidelines for reporting bad/broken reviews.
If a forum mod could sticky this, I'd appreciate it.
================= The Deal ================= If you've found something that's inaccurate, wrong, needs fixing, or needs updating in a review or listing, please report it. This includes spam reviews, typos, and artifacts as a result of the move from the old site to the new.
You can report things by posting them here or by contacting me (or another mod).
================= Contact Info ================= Lowery's email/AIM: lowery.hotud [at] gmail [dot] com Put the whole email address in for AIM, it'll work. I'm more likely to respond to email if I'm offline on AIM. (remember to replace [at] and [dot] with @ and . :p )
================= Report Format ================= When you create a report to post here or email, please follow this example:

You can also click report review on the review itself. I forgot to mention that.

Re: Guidelines for reporting bad/broken reviews.
Should i report most of the reviews from JakeGamer ? http://www.hotud.org/reviews/myreviews/?user=1972 He basically often has nothing to say about the game and just says "good game" or whatever.
Exemple of a review:
Patrick Stewart Voice Acting. Fun Game well made. This game has 2 sequals.
About Lands of Lore...

Re: Guidelines for reporting bad/broken reviews.
Some day, perhaps, I will dredge up my lengthy log of site corrections.
In the meantime, as I've mentioned before, there are two rather systematic problems afoot:
Many of the reviews contain question marks where there should be apostrophes, dashes, or quotation marks. These are undoubtedly a result of cutting-and-pasting to and from Excel when the reviews were created.
Secondly, of the many, many dead links scattered throughout the database, a good chunk of them point to the long-dead Gamesdomain.co.uk. Fortunately most of the site is backed up at archive.org. Keep in mind that archive.org accepts wildcards in its URLs along with specific dates, so it may not be necessary to look up the URL of the archived copy of each individual link.

I completely agree, most of his reviews offer no insight into the actual games themselves. I'd like to see them removed.

Re: Guidelines for reporting bad/broken reviews.
All right, here we go: the complete contents of the old Grand Corrections Thread from the old board. This is actually a backup from a few years ago, but a lot of it never changed much. (I will of course use the approved format given above in the future.) General Review Errors Aquanox: main character is named Emerald 'Deadeye' Flint, not Jake Gaston. Flint is what he is also called in Aquanox Boppin Deluxe: Now truly freeware Bust-A-Move is not a fanmade recreation! Earth 2150: Lost Souls: Review was cut off at "groundbreakin" Earthsiege 2 [was] a CD Rip? The Games: Summer Edition is not "The official game for the 1988 Olympic Games at Soeul" (but rather is endorsed by USOC) Jabberwock is shareware and is actually named Engage to Jabberwock (but the official site with this info is down) Micro Machines 2: Special Edition should be Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos: year should be 1993 or 1994? Scavengers of the Mutant World: year should be 1988 Stick Soldiers has no multiplayer
Downloads Akuji the Demon: Does the download now feature the officially-endorsed patch rather than the one made by D-Boy? Dig-It: Could use a repacking Discworld: Archive contains readme.txts from other games (thread) Geisha: Manual and solution are pretty much the same thing Heart of the Alien: Install instructions are slightly off (and should be better publicized for all Sega CD games) Iron Man/XO Manowar has strange junk in archive (thread) Kharne: Presently hosted on the Community Site Knight Force needs to be cracked; at least one other version on the internet is cracked, but cracked badly Metal Gear: Download appears to be of a version that is buggy and incompletable. Wikipeida suggests that a version without this bug exists. Parkan: Iron Strategy: Not cracked (thread) Shadow Watch is missing vital files Toy Shop is corrupted Wing Commander: Secret Ops: Archive contains readme.txts from other games
Companies/Designers 3D Monster Maze (Developer Malcolm Evans, Copyright Malcolm Evans; see Wikipedia article ) Assault Trooper (Lomax Software, not Webfoot) Callahan's Crosstime Saloon (Publisher Mindscape, not Legend) Diggles (Developer SEK, not Innonics) Earth 2150 (Developer Topware, not Zuxxez) Emergency - Fighters for Life (Developer Sixteen Tons Entertainment) Entomorph: Plague of The Darkfall (Designers Herb Perez and Jim DuBois) Farocar (Lomax Software, not Webfoot) Fatal Fumes (Lomax Software, not Webfoot; Mobygames says Spectrum Pacific Publishing) Impossible Mission 2 (Publisher Epyx, not Konami?) Knights & Merchants (Developer Joymania, not Interactive Magic) Magic & Mayhem (Publisher Bethesda?) Monuments of Mars (Designers Todd Replogle and Scott Miller, not George Broussard) Pharaoh's Tomb (Designer George Broussard) Project Paradise (Developer Ikarion and Soft Enterprises, not Ikarion) Stone Age (Developer Bonespark Software Artistic, not Stone Age) UEFA Champions League 98-99 (Developer Silicon Dreams, not Krisalis, Publisher Eidos, not Philips Media) Vigilance on Talos V (Developer ?, Publisher Square Wheel Studios; only the OS/2 version was PolyEx) Wizards (Board game designers are Coral and Thomas Mosbo) Xenopods (Designer not Tom Hall; Mobygames says Mike Maynard, James T. Row) Z (Publisher EON Digital Entertainment, not Virgin Interactive)
Company Information Delphic Oracle: no page Ionos went bankrupt, incorrect link SOCKO! Entertainment: defunct, dead website Topware should link to Topware.pl and detail the complex saga from that other thread Yano Electric: Website is http://www.yano-el.co.jp/ (?) Zuxxez: Also part of the Topware saga
Boxes/Screenshots SimFarm for Windows: screenshot is DOS version Elfland: box is out there somewhere! Earthsiege: bad screenshot Emergency: Fighters for Life: Box is for completely different game! Vigilance on Talos V: I sent a boxshot of this one!
Other manuals Infocom documentation at http://infodoc.plover.net/manuals/ (enchanter, sorcerer, and spellbreaker at least) Criterion Goes to the Movies: No Solutions link

The original Underdogs summary of X-Com has a Note: at the bottom referring to a download which doesn't exist (and shouldn't, because the game is being sold now).

There is a wrong screenshot(taken from IG2 I believe) in Imperium galactica 1. Funny-the same screenshot is posted in reviews all over the internet.
the <?> bug in developer name, mentioned before. should be István

Re: Guidelines for reporting bad/broken reviews.
http://www.hotud.org/component/content/ … cient-evil
Review says that it is "Similar to Blades of Exile" and even lists BoE in the "Games you might also like' thing at the bottom. This is a bit like saying that Doom is "Like Duck Hunt..."(because they are both action games using guns). Blades of Exile is a top-down, 2D, party-based old school tile based RPG construction set(more like Azalta or FRUA than Ancient Evil) while Ancient Evil is a Diablo knock-off(regardless of how good it may be in any reviewer's opinion).
http://www.hotud.org/component/content/ … -rpg/21520
Angband review:
Nothing really WRONG with this review but it should mention the primary difference between Angband and the other rogelikes(re: Nethack, etc.) is that Angband (re)generates dungeon levels randomly every time you visit them(so if you leave dungeon level one to go to town and buy something, then come back to the same dungeon level it will be an all new level...inexplicably re-randomized.).
http://www.hotud.org/component/content/ … -rpg/19910
Conan review:
Minor quibble here but, while Conan DOES appear in comic books(and has done so continuously for decades) to call him a "comic book hero"(the review says the game "traces the adventures of well-known comic book hero Conan") is a bit like referring to Kevin Bacon as a "famous musician" when reviewing the "Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game. Conan is most famously(and originally) a pulp fiction icon whose novelizations were in print for some 35+ years before any comic books about him were produced.
http://www.hotud.org/component/content/ … -rpg/20001
Dink Smallwood game:
In the Downloads section is a file called "Dinosaur Balls"(likely a virus or spam) that is far too small to be the Dink game (and probably too small to be one of the D-mods). Also the "platform" says "Win XP" but it was actually released for Windows 98.
http://www.hotud.org/component/content/ … -rpg/21799
Daggerfall:
This game was recently released as freeware by Bethesda.
http://www.hotud.org/component/content/ … -rpg/22159
Falcon's Eye - Nethack
The review must be very old because it says "constantly updated by the author" while the game itself has been abandoned by the author for several years now. However it has been continued by other authors in the form of "Vulture's Eye".
http://www.hotud.org/component/content/ … -rpg/24462
Gearhead
Gearhead 1 & 2 can be downloaded HERE
http://www.hotud.org/component/content/ … -Helherron
The download version is the old 2.03 version(before it was released as freeware). I just now uploaded the 2.04 version to you but you should still keep the 2.03 version(I am looking for my old reg. code right now to upload) because it is far less buggy than the 2.04(official freeware version), even if it has less features. the 2.04 version is so buggy that only the most die-hard fans of this type of RPG will bother with it.
http://www.hotud.org/component/content/ … -rpg/22441
Kharne: The Revelation
I have the last version of Kharne: The Revelation(0.14 I believe). Will upload it for you.
http://www.hotud.org/component/content/ … -rpg/24460
This game is NOT called "Liberty Crime Squad". It is called LIBERAL Crime Squad and it's creator(Tarn Adams) is the same guy behind the famous "Dwarf Fortress" roguelike.
http://www.hotud.org/component/content/ … -rpg/22614
Nahlakh is NOT a roguelike game by any stretch. Easy to understand why UD assumed as much since Proudfoot was known as the guy behind "Slash'(Nethack variant) but it simply isn't.
Same goes for:
http://www.hotud.org/component/content/ … -rpg/22615
Natuk. Not a roguelike. Has NO roguelike features. No randomized dungeon generation. No perma-death.
http://www.hotud.org/component/content/ … -rpg/23313

Re: Guidelines for reporting bad/broken reviews.
Well, well. Your efforts are appreciated, Mr. SkeleTony. I just wish there was someone else who could see to it that your many fine suggestions are implemented. I guess getting downloads up is the priority right now.

Dinosaur Balls is probably a legitimate download; there are just a lot of mismatched downloads of that nature in the database right now. And as I mentioned above, there are many, many games listed with "Windows XP" as a platform that could run under any 32-bit Windows. Some day it will have to be dealt with.

Re: Guidelines for reporting bad/broken reviews.
Ah...I see. Yeah I am noticing a few mis-matched files/entries in the Strategy games section as well.
A note about my above ZangbandTK reference for the download. Apparently the Abandonia site just took HoTU's original(broken) download and re-uploaded the same exact file to their own site. Has the same error when trying to run it, same file structure etc.. Will find a real/working version of that one later.

By all means, please point them out! I'm trying to go back to primary sources for downloads rather than relying on other gaming sites.

Incorrect author information: http://www.hotud.org/component/content/ … tion/24645
It should be Masaki Kobayashi & Matt Sephton. I know because I'm Matt Sephton the author of Wire Hang Redux
